Legionella Prevention and Scald Control System Installation

CONSTRUCCIONES SDPM JFM JOINT VENTURE

This design-build project was for installing all recommended engineering controls to eliminate or diminish the possibility of Legionella growth in the potable water and the cooling tower water systems at the VA Caribbean Healthcare Center in San Juan. The design and control of the system required monitoring of water parameters in real-time through the existing BAS (Building Automation System) to a central workstation. The Engineering Controls were able to start the remediation procedures in the case of a positive Legionella outbreak. The system's design required specific drawings prepared by the Joint Venture's AE Team. The project was done according to VA guides, standards, and requirements. It also had to meet local and federal code standards for health safety, engineering standards, and industry best practices. Work required detailed demolition drawings, all necessary civil, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical engineering disciplines, and the installation with unique construction trades. The Joint Venture prepared detailed phasing and construction coordination drawings, plans, and a schedule to execute the work. Construction was performed so that normal hospital operations were not interrupted or disturbed. The contract required asbestos removal and safety protocols. The project significantly impacted the entire VA Campus, with a daily population of over 10,000 visits per day, and modifications were executed under the terms of the contract, safely, on time, and with an exceptional rating on our CPARS.
